We had two wake-ups overnight in what has become the standard sleep schedule once again. Every time we think we’ve cracked the toddler code we quickly end up back here, needing to rotate shifts for afternoon naps to get through the day. At least now he can tell us what we wants, or at least what he thinks he wants in his befuddled state, anyway. Both times last night the reason for the disturbance was ‘Mulk! Mulk!’ [Get up and make me a cup of warm milk on the double!], not entirely unexpected considering how little he’s been willing to consume at dinner time lately, and at least we can do something about it and hopefully get back to bed relatively fast, so that’s something.
The little sleep thief spent most of the day with his grandparents, giving us another day free to fill with errands, but apart from a few bits and pieces of gardening and a big ole pile of laundry (it really looks like a lot of nappies when you pile them up like that) it’s mostly been a day of idleness, which suits us just fine. We don’t get a lot of idleness when the small one is around, or rather we do, but it’s the sort of idleness that comes in little unexpected bursts, for too short a period to do anything meaningful before our attention is needed elsewhere, and that doesn’t help recharge the batteries.
We’re very much enjoying the boy being old enough and the grandparents being involved enough to give us more frequent and more extended breaks from toddler duty. Yes, toddler duty is one of the great pleasures of life, but it’s pretty excellent to let someone else do it for a while, too. How does toddler duty compare to baby duty? It’s all a bit of a blur, really, but we’re going to get a rude reminder in just over a week. I can’t wait.
